German levels and exams

The levels of German proficiency are commonly defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which provides a structured way to describe and measure language ability. The CEFR divides language proficiency into six levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. Here's a brief overview of each level and what learners can typically do at each stage.
As a learner progresses through these levels, they typically need more exposure to authentic materials, more varied practice, and perhaps formal instruction to continue advancing. Language learning tools, such as textbooks, online courses, language exchange partners, immersive experiences, and formal instruction, can all be helpful at different stages of the learning journey.

A1 - Beginner
  • At this level, learners have very basic knowledge of the language.
  • Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very simple sentences.
  • Can introduce themselves and others, ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know, and things they have.
  • Can interact in a simple way, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly.
